Smokey Robinson-backed Aussie pop group to tour US

DETROIT (AP) ? An Australian pop quartet's music really got a hold of Smokey Robinson.

Motown Records' signature vocalist loved Human Nature's take on the legendary label's standards so much that he signed on as the group's official presenter and helped facilitate a lengthy run for it at the Imperial Palace hotel in Las Vegas.

Now, the guys are heading out for their first U.S. tour, which kicks off Saturday in ? where else ? Detroit.

Human Nature (brothers Andrew and Mike Tierney and fellow high school classmates Phil Burton and Toby Allen) have released nine albums, five of which went to No. 1 in their native country.

They've opened for Celine Dion and Michael Jackson in Europe and Australia and performed the national anthem at the Summer Olympic Games in their home city of Sydney in 2000.

But it was their 2005 Motown tribute, "Reach Out," that attracted the attention of Robinson.

"They came to the studio one night in Los Angeles ... and sang for me a cappella with no music ? just them singing ? and blew me away, man. Just awesome," the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer told The Associated Press in a phone interview. "I am so enamored with them."

And, thanks in part to Robinson's backing, the group nailed down an exclusive booking at the Imperial Palace, where they have played five and six nights a week to sold-out crowds for the past two-and-a-half years.

The group is moving beyond Nevada with the 10-city tour, which will take them to Washington, New York, Chicago and Boston through May 6. Add to that a PBS special ? featuring Robinson ? that began airing in December and a CD of Motown covers that was released earlier this month, and Human Nature is well on its way to expanding its influence beyond its roots in Oceania.

Not only does the group have Robinson to thank for its stateside successes, but also the music of Motown, which enjoyed its heyday nearly a half-century ago but has been embraced by generations of listeners drawn to its timelessness.

So, what could these guys possibly bring to the music that hasn't been done better by Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and company?

"They have put their own touch on (the songs)," Robinson said. "They sing the Motown music, but they do it like Human Nature does it."

For their part, Human Nature simply loves singing the songs.

"Our roots lie in American soul," Andrew Tierney said. "It's the ultimate market for what we love."

It may seem strange on the surface that this particular group is helping to carry on the Motown legacy. But considering the label's reputation for busting through color barriers, it does make sense.

"Why should people listen to four white Australians sing these songs when they're ubiquitous on radio and TV?" Andrew Tierney said. "It just shows that this music is written for everybody and that it has reached to every corner of the globe, including Australia. And it's still influencing people, just as it touched us."

Symptoms and Characteristics of Autism | Health and Fitness

The word autism has become the common used term for all disorders categorized in the autism spectrum, such as Asperger Syndrome and PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified). These, and including autism itself, are similar enough in symptoms that they are easily misdiagnosed-and were in the early days of the discovery of this class of disorder. Symptoms and characteristics of such disorders range from mild to severe and despite an overall basic makeup, will affect each bearer differently.

The most common and respected cause of Autism occurs when there is a mutation of the genes. This disorder can occur in both sexes; however, studies have shown that it affects boys more so than girls. Symptoms of this neural development disorder can appear as soon as 6 months of age and will have ?settled in? so to speak between two and three years of age. The earlier the diagnoses the better capable of preparing the child for integration into a ?normal? life-at least in so far is possible for someone with autism.

This disorder affects a child?s perception of the world surrounding them. Not only do they see things differently, they compute and learn things differently as well. There is no cure for this syndrome, at least not one that has been tested true but while remission is not a possibility, functioning in society is. Autism cases range in severity. From mild cases and high functioning autistic, to ones suffering with severe mental retardation, each case is unique to the child diagnosed.

Common to all ASD cases however, is a history of repetitive behavior: hand flapping and repetitive movement (stereotypy), arranging items in uniform stacks and lines (compulsive), reacts negatively to changes in schedule and routine (ritualistic), eye poking, skin picking, head banging (self-injury). These behaviors are one of the many difficulties an autistic child will face throughout his/her life. Problems with motor coordination are indicated throughout the spectrum as well however; seem to be more prominent in standard autism. And while these symptoms are indicative of autism and its counterparts, others may develop as a result of the disorder. Gastrointestinal difficulties stem from the fact that diet is often affected in autistic children. Their repetitive and compulsive behaviors will leak over into the nutritional choices and often lead to selectivity in preferred foods-leading to a strong refusal of others. Studies have shown that while this doesn?t necessarily cause malnutrition it is a main factor in their GI troubles.

Unfortunately, people tend to think of this disorder in a negative light, and while it is undeniable the negative aspects that an autistic child faces in his/her life-it could prove more beneficial to the child to define it in terms of ?being different?. Autistic children are not sick. They were born and began developing differences in their neural make up. Their brains began developing at a different rate as their bodies progressed steadily at the norm. These children are faced with altered factors in life, but this in no way makes them negatively different. Yes, autistic children will develop differently from other children. They will learn things differently, see things differently, and react to outside stimuli in a different manner. Still, autism while being a neurodevelopmental disorder should in no way be considered a stigma.

Happy Mardi Gras! / miss chew: a beauty blog about a tale of beauty ...

Good Morning everyone and happy Monday. This weekend I marched for the first time in the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras for a cause which really means a lot to me. I marched with the Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby.

Taken from their website:

The Gay & Lesbian Rights Lobby (GLRL) advocates on behalf of the?lesbians and gay men. We provide referral and educative resources on gay and lesbian rights to?the media, policy makers and the community.

We lobby politicians, government departments, policy makers and the media to redress discrimination against lesbians and gay men.

We represent the gay and lesbian community at the local, state and national level through statewide consultations. Our major consultations have?highlighted social injustice and legal inequality faced by lesbians and gay men, in areas such as relationship recognition, parenting and adoption rights, workplace discrimination, the age of consent and homophobic violence.

We educate the gay and lesbian community on how to activate their rights. We provide information?to the?community, media and individuals on gay and lesbian rights and areas of discrimination. We refer clients to legal and welfare services and direct them to ways to enforce their rights.

We empower the community to take action in the push for equality.?The GLRL runs volunteer working groups which organise campaigns and events highlight equality issues.

In particular they are fighting for Equal marriage rights with their slogan ?All Love is Equal?. I have so many friends within the Gay and Lesbian community and really think they should be allowed to have the same rights as everyone else.

So I marched and it rained the whole way but it was one of the best moments of my life. I could feel the love and the support of the hundreds and thousands of people who were watching and cheering all around me, I cannot describe the joy I felt, even though I was drenched.

Now back on the beauty side of things, since I knew it was probably going to rain I kept my makeup minimal with lots of glitter.

I had been wanting a good subtle glitter and went to priceline and found this little beauty, the Om SHE Aromatherapy Glitter Gel in Crystal Shimmer- $11.95. I love this, the colour of the glitter is so beautiful andI find the glitter really buildable. As it is water base it feels really comfortable on your skin and contains no alcohol. I have recently learnt from other bloggers about the importance of being careful with which glitters you put around your eyes as many are actually tiny shade of cut glass and you DO NOT want that around your eyes. This however is very safe and lasts really well thoroughout the night. Ok maybe not so much in the rain though?

Now I thought I would share some pics of my looks for the march and the night and some generally fun pics!

This was my look for the march. I didn?t bother about doing anything for my hair as it rained but I did quite angular cheekbones with lots and lots of glitter. The SHE glitter gel I applied along the tops of my cheekbones and up the sides of my temples in a C shape. I also got spray on glitter from the $2 shops and sprayed that well? everywhere? This pic hardly does it justice?I also made sure I had hot pink lips and I will talk about that lipgloss later as it is amazing.

Loving my $2 shop heart sunnies, well we were marching in the sea of hearts!

My nails? gotta stick with the Mardi Gras theme, I used the Sally Hansen Salon Effects which you can buy from Priceline again, love that place. I used the mega watt gold glitter ones and I got many compliments on them! When it comes to Mardi Gras it is all about rainbows and glitter?

With our marching T-shirts on which say ?All love is Equal?

Our fabulous dancers for our float!

My fabulous marching friends!

Mid march with our hearts!

Ready to party at the official After Party!

The Deets

Commercial Real Estate Vacancy Rates Improving, Rents Firming

According to the National Association of Realtors? quarterly commercial real estate forecast, all of the major commercial real estate sectors are seeing improved fundamentals, but multifamily housing is becoming a landlord?s market commanding bigger rent increases. These trends also are confirmed in NAR?s recent quarterly Commercial Real Estate Market Survey.

Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, said vacancy rates are improving in all of the major commercial real estate sectors. ?Sustained job creation is benefiting commercial real estate sectors by increasing demand for space,? he said. ?Vacancy rates are steadily falling. Leasing is on the rise and rents are showing signs of strengthening, especially in the apartment market where rents are rising the fastest.?

NAR forecasts commercial vacancy rates over the next year to decline 0.4 percentage point in the office sector, 0.8 point in industrial real estate, 0.9 point in the retail sector and 0.2 percentage point in the multifamily rental market.

?Household formation appears to be rising from pent-up demand,? Yun said. ?The tight apartment market should encourage more apartment construction. Otherwise, rent increases could further accelerate in the near-to-intermediate term.?

The Society of Industrial and Office Realtors? shows a notable gain in its SIOR Commercial Real Estate Index, an attitudinal survey of 297 local market experts.1

The SIOR index, measuring the impact of 10 variables, jumped 8.3 percentage points to 63.8 in the fourth quarter, following a gain of 0.6 percentage point in the third quarter. The index remains well below the level of 100 that represents a balanced marketplace, which was last seen in the third quarter of 2007.

Most market indicators posted advances in the fourth quarter, but 71 percent of respondents said leasing activity is below historic levels in their market ? an improvement from 83 percent in the third quarter. Only 29 percent report there is ample sublease space available.

Office and industrial space remains a tenant?s market ? 87 percent of participants feel that tenants are getting a range of benefits ranging from moderate concessions to deep rent discounts.

Construction activity is still low, with 95 percent of experts reporting it is below normal, and 83 percent said it is a buyers? market for development acquisitions; prices are below construction costs in 78 percent of markets.

Participants are broadly expecting stronger conditions for the current quarter, with two out of three expecting market improvement.

NAR?s latest Commercial Real Estate Outlook2 offers projections for four major commercial sectors and analyzes quarterly data in the office, industrial, retail and multifamily markets. Historic data for metro areas were provided by REIS, Inc.,3 a source of commercial real estate performance information.

Office Markets
Vacancy rates in the office sector are projected to fall from 16.4 percent in the current quarter to 16.0 percent in the first quarter of 2013.

The markets with the lowest office vacancy rates presently are Washington, D.C., with a vacancy rate of 9.5 percent; New York City, at 10.0 percent; and New Orleans, 12.4 percent.

After rising 1.6 percent in 2011, office rents should increase another 1.9 percent this year and 2.4 percent in 2013. Net absorption of office space in the U.S., which includes the leasing of new space coming on the market as well as space in existing properties, is forecast at 20.1 million square feet in 2012 and 28.1 million next year.

Industrial Markets
Industrial vacancy rates are likely to decline from 11.7 percent in the first quarter of this year to 10.9 percent in the first quarter of 2013.

The areas with the lowest industrial vacancy rates currently are Orange County, Calif., with a vacancy rate of 4.8 percent; Los Angeles, 4.9 percent; and Miami at 7.6 percent.

Annual industrial rent is expected to rise 1.8 percent in 2012 and 2.3 percent next year. Net absorption of industrial space nationally is seen at 40.6 million square feet this year and 57.7 million in 2013.

Retail Markets
Retail vacancy rates are forecast to decline from 11.9 percent in the current quarter to 11.0 percent in the first quarter of 2013.

Presently, markets with the lowest retail vacancy rates include San Francisco, 3.6 percent; Fairfield County, Conn., at 5.1 percent; and Long Island, N.Y., at 5.4 percent.

Average retail rent should rise 0.7 percent this year and 1.2 percent in 2013. Net absorption of retail space is projected at 9.9 million square feet this year and 23.9 million in 2013.

Multifamily Markets
The apartment rental market ? multifamily housing ? is likely to see vacancy rates drop from 4.7 percent in the first quarter to 4.5 percent in the first quarter of 2013; multifamily vacancy rates below 5 percent generally are considered a landlord?s market with demand justifying higher rents.

Areas with the lowest multifamily vacancy rates currently are New York City, 1.8 percent; Minneapolis and Portland, Ore., each at 2.5 percent; and San Jose, Calif., at 2.7 percent.

After rising 2.2 percent last year, average apartment rent is expected to increase 3.8 percent in 2012 and another 4.0 percent next year. Multifamily net absorption is forecast at 209,900 units this year and 223,600 in 2013.

The Commercial Real Estate Outlook is published by the NAR Research Division for the commercial community. NAR?s Commercial Division, formed in 1990, provides targeted products and services to meet the needs of the commercial market and constituency within NAR.

NFL gives guidance to its music hopefuls (AP)

Protein complex affects cells' ability to move, respond to external cues

ScienceDaily (Mar. 1, 2012) ? In a paper just published in the journal Cell, a team from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has explained for the first time how a long-studied protein complex affects cell migration and how external cues affect cell's ability to migrate.

Cell migration is one of life's basic processes, from development in the womb to immune system response, to learning and brain development, wound healing and -- when it goes wrong -- in cancer.

Jim Bear, PhD, principal investigator on the study, says, "The ARP 2/3 protein complex is -- evolutionarily speaking -- very old, but very little is known about what happens to cells when it is eliminated. It was thought previously that cells could simply not survive without it. Thanks to Norman Sharpless' lab here at UNC, we were able to find a cell line where the protein can be eliminated without loss of viability in order to see what happens to cells."

The result, says Bear, was fascinating. With the ARP 2/3 protein complex intact, cells migrate by forming a fan-shaped structure, called a lamellipodia, at the leading edge. The team found that eliminating this protein complex caused cells to switch to making finger-shaped protrusions instead -- called filopodia. The cells with "fingers" on the leading edge move much more slowly than those with "fans."

Bear, who is an associate professor of cell and developmental biology and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Early Career Scientist, has focused his laboratory's work around how cell movement responds to environmental cues. Once his team figured out that loss of ARP 2/3 could change cells actual structure and movement, they went on to look at how those changes affected the ability of cells to respond to external cues.

"Cells sense a wide variety of soluble chemical cues through 'chemotaxis' -- a process that is the basis behind many drugs that target cell behavior. They also respond to attached cues from the surface that they are crawling upon -- a much less well understood process called haptotaxis," says Bear, who is also a member of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

So Bear's team set out to test the widely held idea that the cells require lamellipodia "fans" to respond to chemotactic cues. They found that cells with lamellipodia "fans" and filopodia "fingers" (with and without the ARP 2/3 protein complex) respond to chemotaxic cues indistinguishably, although they move faster with lamellipodia.

"The really interesting finding came when we looked at how each type of cell responds to hapotactic cues," says Bear. The team developed a new laboratory technique that uses a microfluidic device to lay down a gradient of a surface molecules (or substrate) for the cells to 'crawl' across in a way that could be measured in the lab. They could then look at whether the cells could 'sense' a gradient in the matrix. With the ARP 2/3 protein complex, the cells with "fans" on the leading edge followed the gradient of the surface proteins in an orderly, predictable faction. Without it, the cells with "fingers" moved randomly.

"This experiment -- which was possible only with the help of many diverse UNC colleagues ranging from genetics to biomedical engineering -- finally tells us what lamellipodia and the ARP 2/3 protein complex do: help the cell respond to clues from the extracellular environment. It has long been assumed that the protein was important for chemotaxis, but that is not the case."

The study opens the way for a new frontier of investigation in the area of hapotaxis, or behavioral clues that cells get from the extracellular matrix. Also, says Bear, "We don't understand chemotaxis as well as we thought. What are the forces in the cell that respond to soluble cues?"

Both areas of investigation could be important for future breakthroughs in areas requiring precisely controlled cell migratory behavior including wound healing and tissue repair, cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Other members of the research team include members of the Bear lab, Congying Wu, BS, Sreeja Asokan, PhD, and Liz Haynes, BS, as well as Matt Berginski, BS, and Shawn Gomez, Eng.Sc.D. from the UNC/NCSU Biomedical Engineering program, and Norman E. (Ned) Sharpless, PhD, and Jack Griffith, PhD, from UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. In addition, many of the imaging experiments were conducted in the UNC-Olympus Imaging Research Center, of which Bear is the director.

The research was funded by NIH (Institute for General Medicine) and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

(AP) ? Powerful as the NFL is, it's making way for President Barack Obama.

Opting to play a game on a Wednesday for the first time in more than 60 years, the NFL will open the regular season on Sept. 5, to avoid conflicting with Obama's speech at the Democratic National Convention the next night.

The Super Bowl champion New York Giants will host the Wednesday night season-opener starting at 8:30 p.m. EDT; their opponent hasn't been announced yet.

According to the league, it hasn't played a game on a Wednesday since Sept. 22, 1948, when the Rams faced the Lions.

The NFL regular season has started on a Thursday since 2002.

This year's change was announced by the league on Tuesday.
