An international group of scientists has identified three genetic regions that predispose Asian women who have never smoked to lung cancer. The finding provides further evidence that risk of lung cancer among never-smokers, especially Asian women, may be associated with certain unique inherited genetic characteristics that distinguishes it from lung cancer in smokers.
Lung cancer in never-smokers is the seventh leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, and the majority of lung cancers diagnosed historically among women in Eastern Asia have been in women who never smoked. The specific genetic variations found in this study had not been associated with lung cancer risk in other populations.
Although environmental factors, such as secondhand smoke (also known as environmental tobacco smoke) or exhaust from indoor cooking are likely account for some cases of lung cancer among Asian women who have never smoked, they explain only a small proportion of the disease. To gain a better understanding of lung cancer in Asian female never-smokers, researchers from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, partnered with researchers from several other countries to create the Female Lung Cancer Consortium in Asia to conduct one of the largest genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in female never-smokers to date. GWAS compares DNA markers across the genome between people with a disease or trait to people without the disease or trait.
"This study is the first large-scale genome-wide association study of lung cancer among never-smoking females anywhere in the world," said Qing Lan, M.D., Ph.D., a senior investigator in NCI's Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, and the leader of the study.
The consortium, whose findings were reported Nov.11, 2012, online in Nature Genetics, conducted a GWAS that combined data from 14 studies that included a total of approximately 14,000 Asian women (6,600 with lung cancer and 7,500 without lung cancer). The studies included data on environmental factors, including exposure to secondhand smoke.
The consortium found that variations at three locations in the genometwo on chromosome 6 and one on chromosome 10were associated with lung cancer in Asian female never-smokers. The discovery on chromosome 10 was particularly significant because it has not been found in any other GWAS of lung cancer in white or Asian populations.
"Our study provides strong evidence that common inherited genetic variants contribute to an increased risk of lung cancer among Asian women who have never smoked," said Nathaniel Rothman, M.D., a senior investigator in NCI's Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics and coauthor of the study. "These variants may also increase lung cancer risk associated with environmental factors, such as environmental tobacco smoke."
The researchers did not detect an association with variations at a location on chromosome 15 that has been associated with lung cancer risk in many previous GWAS of lung cancer in smokers. The absence of this association provides further support for the suggestion that the genetic variation on chromosome 15 may be smoking-related.
The researchers found some evidence that Asian women with one of the newly identified genetic variants may be more susceptible to the effects of environmental tobacco smoke. However, the authors note that more research is needed to draw definitive conclusions from this observation.
"This study is an example of how genome-wide association susceptibility studies can evaluate inherited genetic risk in populations with unique characteristics or environmental exposures," said Stephen J. Chanock, M.D., acting co-director of NCI's Center for Cancer Genomics and a co-author of the study. "We will continue to develop better, smarter applications of this technique and apply them to populations where we have detailed information on environmental factors to further our understanding of how inherited genetic factors modify risk from environmental exposures."

In 1966 James S. Coleman was hired by the Department of Education to conduct a study about education equality in the US. Coleman (1966) found that teachers had a greater impact on student achievement than either the facility or the curriculum itself. This report was written in the context of a journal article with the findings from the study discussed. One of the most important aspects of Coleman?s (1966) report was the notion that a low achieving student will become a high achieving student if placed in a classroom with other high achieving students. This is significant because it means that if a school has a high population of student who are failing, there is a good chance that if they are pout into a classroom with high achieving students then the probability that they will start succeeding in school is high.
Another interesting fact that was pulled from Coleman?s (1966) report was that concept of the students attitude. What Coleman (1966) calls the ?pupil attitude factor? is a good indicator of a student?s success. This factor can be explained as simply being the extent to which an individual feels he or she has control over his or her future. In other words, if a student feels like they have the ability to be successful and can control their future, then they will be high achieving. When thinking about this concept it is understandable that if someone feels like they have no future or control over their future then they will cease to want to continue to go forward.
I believe that this report has help educational reform because it led to classrooms getting mixed around so that there were high and low achieving students in one classroom. I also think that there was a change in the area where students are told that they are there to better their own future and that they have control over how successful they are.? I believe that these changes were extremely important and have improved the learning environment exponentially since the 1960s.

By Gail Belsky for Your Family Today
If it feels like you lose days of your life preparing for the holidays, it?s because you probably do. According to a 2010 survey conducted by Consumer Reports, the average American woman spends 42 hours buying, wrapping and returning presents; standing on supermarket lines; and attending holiday gatherings. That doesn?t even count the days spent decorating, cooking, cleaning and entertaining. (Don?t feel bad: A 2010 survey in the U.K. showed that British women spend 300 hours on the holidays!)
If it also feels like you?re in holiday mode for months, it?s because you probably are: According to the National Retail Federation, 40 percent of Americans begin their holiday shopping before Halloween.
So with all the energy and attention that goes into making the season bright, how do you keep family at the top of your list? By including them in the act. Here are five festive ways to make holiday prep a family affair.
1. Run a mall marathon.
You don?t have to be the only one racing from store to store. Bring the whole family and split up into groups. (Older kids can be their own team.) Divide the shopping list so the kids don?t see what they or their siblings are getting, and then fan out across the mall. Arrange a post-shopping meeting spot and a time to gather. The team that arrives first ?wins.? Then, reward all marathon runners with a family dinner out.
2. Record the proceedings.
Who says gearing up for the holidays isn?t entertaining? Have the kids break out the digital recorder or camera and put them in charge of making a ?documentary? on the pre-festivity preparations. Then, when you?re ready for a break, sit down for a family screening and a big bowl of popcorn.
3. Start a cooking assembly line.
Even the most mundane tasks become fun when you do them as a group. Time to make the carrots? Pass out the peeler, cutting board and knife, and give everyone a station to man. Little kids can take their positions at the sink to hose down the peeled carrots in a colander, or at the counter to dry the veggies off with paper towels.
4. Cruise the cookbooks.
You may have a set holiday menu that you stick to each year, but even the biggest traditionalist can work in a surprise dish to shake things up. Have your family do the picking together! Pull out your favorite cookbooks and let everyone flag their favorites. Then put it to a vote. Or put each family member in charge of finding a certain type of dish -- appetizer, side dish, dessert.
5. Divvy up the decorations.
Kids can lose patience when you spend hours on tree trimming, so give them smaller decorating projects. Let them come up with creative ways to hang indoor holiday lights or make decorations for the mantelpiece or table. Introduce them to some old-time holiday crafts like cutting out paper snowflakes or stringing a popcorn garland. You don?t all have to be doing the same thing at the same time to be doing things together. Joining forces to get things done is a great way to share the holidays.

ANKARA/CEYLANPINAR, Turkey (Reuters) - Around 9,000 Syrian refugees have fled to Turkey in the past 24 hours, the U.N. refugee agency said on Friday, one of the largest single day influxes, while Turkish state media said 26 defecting Syrian army officers had also arrived.
More than 120,000 registered Syrian refugees are now sheltering in Turkish camps, and tens of thousands of unregistered Syrians are living in Turkish border towns and villages.
The latest influx caused alarm in Turkey which is increasingly concerned about its ability to cope with such large refugee numbers and has pushed hard - so far without success - for a buffer zone to be set up inside Syria where refugees could be housed.
The inflow could see it redouble efforts to persuade others of the need for such a buffer zone and may encourage Ankara to speed up a planned request to NATO to deploy Patriot surface-to-air missiles on its border to guard against a spillover of violence. Such a move could be part of a no-fly zone.
Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan hit out at the 15-nation Security Council on Friday.
"It is very strange. There are currently atrocities being committed in Syria and these atrocities are being directed by a state leader. While these atrocities are continuing ... there is a United Nations that is remaining silent towards it," Erdogan said during a trip to Indonesia.
"How far will this go? When will the permanent members of the U.N. Security Council take responsibility? We are obliged to act together to counter this, otherwise we cannot refer to this world body as being democratic," he said.
Ankara has become increasingly vocal about voicing its frustration at the U.N. Security Council over its failure to act to stop a conflict that Syrian opposition activists say has killed 38,000 people.
Although Turkey has repeatedly said it does not want to intervene militarily in Syria, it has slowly been drawn into the conflict and its forces now regularly fire on troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad in the event that shells or bullets cross its border from its southern neighbor.
A Turkish foreign ministry official described the latest influx of refugees as "worrying" and said initial investigation showed there may not be enough capacity to house all of the new arrivals but that Turkey was trying to accommodate them all.
The UNHCR said 1,000 Syrians had also fled to Lebanon and another 1,000 to Jordan in the past 24 hours, swelling the overall total who are registered or being assisted in the region to 408,000.
DEFECTIONS
State-run Anatolian news agency said around 5,000 Syrians had crossed into Turkey's Sanliurfa province overnight, fleeing fighting between rebels and Syrian government forces in the town of Ras al-Ain just across the border in Syria.
Syrian rebels and opposition sources said late on Thursday that Free Syrian Army fighters had captured Ras al-Ain, an Arab and Kurdish town in the northeastern oil-producing province of Hasaka, but that clashes there were continuing.
A Reuters witness in the Turkish border town of Ceylanpinar, which lies opposite Ras al-Ain, said he could hear the continuous sound of gunfire coming from the Syrian town. Rebel fighters in the town could also be heard shouting: "God is greatest!" in between bursts of gunfire.
Schools in Ceylanpinar were closed for the second day in a row, Turkish media reported. Two Turkish civilians were wounded in Ceylanpinar on Thursday after being struck by stray bullets fired from Ras al-Ain.
Anatolian said 26 military officers, including two generals, had defected to Turkey overnight, the biggest mass desertion of senior soldiers from Assad's forces in months.
The officers, among them two generals, 11 colonels, two lieutenant-colonels, two majors, four captains, and five lieutenants, crossed into the border province of Hatay with their families and other soldiers, in a group of 71 people.
They were taken to Apaydin camp in Hatay, where Turkey is sheltering other officers who have defected from Assad's army. Defections of high-ranking officers to Turkey occurred almost daily during the summer but have since slowed.
Relations between Ankara and Damascus, once close allies, are now as frosty as at any time since the Syrian revolt began last year.
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu reiterated on Friday that the Patriot missiles it wanted from NATO were part of ongoing discussions for contingency plans within the alliance but said no official request had been made so far.
Turkey is growing increasingly concerned about security on its border with Syria and has summoned its NATO allies twice this year over the issue, saying the alliance had a duty to protect its own frontier.
The Turkish chief-of-staff has said his troops would respond "with greater force" if shells continued to land in Turkey.
Last month parliament authorized the deployment of troops beyond Turkey but Ankara is reluctant to take any unilateral military action inside Syria.

Hollywoodnews.com: A major Oscar player for Paramount, Robert Zemeckis? ?Flight? opened to positive reviews (76% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and a healthy weekend take of $24.9 million.
The number was incredibly steady for Zemeckis, who returned to live-action for the first time since ?Cast Away,? and carried under his arm a riveting performance by Denzel Washington in service of a commanding script credited to John Gatins.
Audiences might have been surprised by the depth of ?Flight.? Largely advertised as a plane-crash thriller ? piggybacking off Zemeckis? equally gripping crash shots from ?Cast Away? ? the awards-friendly drama is far more interested in the moral fiber of the pilot who landed the damaged commercial airliner, Whip Whitaker (Washington), a struggling alcoholic. Look beyond Washington?s career-topping turn, though, and you?ll find plenty of dark material to explore in Gatins? script, which is where I started a recent conversation with the ?Flight? writer. Here?s John Gatins:
I love the film. It really caught me off guard, though I imagine you are hearing that from a lot of people.
I actually just read Roger Ebert?s really interesting commentary on the film. He?d already given the film a rave review, which was really cool and interesting, But he?s just written a really interesting piece that?s an analysis of Whip?s character that was incredible ? really moving, really interesting. It has been nice. There are a lot of columnists and movie writers tackling thoughtful and thought-provoking pieces about the movie, which is always fun.
That?s funny. I wanted to start with that, because it?s always refreshing speaking with someone after their movie has come out. So often, it?s before, and people aren?t sure how it?s going to play. The marketing campaign did an interesting job of hiding the film?s true emotional intent. Are you happy with the way the picture was received? In what direction is the conversation swinging?
People?s immediate reaction ? I?ve actually spoken to a number of critics and film writers who?ve told me that they?ve seen the movie twice. On a second viewing, they start focusing on a lot of different elements. Denzel?s performance is so amazing that it?s the thing that really resonates with you [the first time through]. You think about him, and you think about his character. I think on a second viewing, people begin thinking about the themes of the movie ? fear, and what do I still believe in when I?m placed in a life-threatening situation.
It has become an interesting discussion of those topics. And it has been fun to sneak around the Internet and read talkbacks where people are talking passionately about everything from Bernoulli?s Principle of Flight versus the question of breathalyzing pilots before they get on planes. It?s crazy! [Laughs]
I braced for some backlash in the days following your opening because of the way the trailers hide the meat of the character study behind the plane-crash effects. That hasn?t happened, but were you thinking about that? Were you prepared?
I think we were. What we knew the entire time is that we were not making a movie with genre handles on it. It did seem like younger bloggers were speculating, ?Oh, I think it?s a supernatural thing. I think he?s been dead the whole time!? [Laughs] And I was like, ?You?re not probably wrong in assuming that.? As you say, when you see the Paramount logo on it, you think ?Flight? is going to be a spectacle. It?s going to be big.
But we had to sell it by saying there was going to be some kind of a mystery to the way the story plays out, and it seemed to have gotten people in.
Having seen the film with a preview audience, there were three or four moments where you absolutely had the crowd in your pocket. You could have heard a pin drop as we waited to see in what direction the film would turn, if ever so slightly.
I appreciate that you said that, and it absolutely was part of the design. When Bob Zemeckis and I started collaborating, he would say that we?re always trying to keep the movie in front of the audience at every turn. It was our mandate to each other. Let?s make sure that the audience has the kind of moments like you just described, where they think, ?I?m not really sure where we?re going, and I?m not really sure where I want us to go.? By the final turn in the movie, I wanted people to check their personal scorecard and go, ?Wait a minute, time out. Am I rooting for this guy or not??
That has been a fun thing. I?ve been sneaking around with my wife all weekend and popping into theaters because I love to watch certain scenes. The fact that people cheer when Harling Mays (John Goodman) returns with a sack full of cocaine ? [Laughs] ? I want people to go, ?What movie am I watching??
I?d love to talk about how the plane-crash sequence looked on the page. It?s a jaw-dropping sequence, but how detailed was your description of it?
As a scared flier, I actually did a ton of research on place accidents. NTSB reports are public record. You can download them and read them at your leisure, and they are kind of boring at times ? they?re a little dense ? but they?re also incredibly gripping and emotional at times. I because further fascinated, and was able to extrapolate from real events, and talk to a lot of pilots who would point me at different accidents and say, ?You should look at this or that.? So by the time Bob and Denzel saw the script, it was the best that a non-pro could do, I?d say. It was pretty close.
Did the research cure you of your fear of flying?
You know, people ask me that a lot. All I can say is that my fear of flying ? I read stats on people?s fears, and the one stat I kept running into is that 1/3 of people have an acute fear of flying. A real, real fear of flying. I don?t know a lot of people who jump up and down about flying, who say, ?Hey, I can?t wait to get on a commercial jet this weekend!? It?s a very odd thing. I have to fly a lot, and sometimes it?s no big deal. Other times, I?m really uncomfortable. I?d say that overall, the movie might have made me feel a little bit better because the truth is, pilots and flight crews are really well trained. It?s still the safest way to travel, even though the physics don?t add up for me. It feels unnatural to be going 600 mph, seven miles above the Earth.
Robert Zemeckis? ?Flight? is in theaters.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? An anti-austerity demonstration by more than 80,000 people in Athens degenerated into violence Wednesday as hundreds of protesters clashed with riot police ahead of a crucial parliamentary vote on new spending cuts.
The vote is the toughest test yet for the country's fragile four month-old coalition government, which must pass the ?13.5 billion ($17 billion) package of measures to ensure Greece continues receiving bailout loans and avoids bankruptcy.
"Today we must confirm Greece's new credibility," said Prime Minister Antonis Samaras. "We choose whether we want to stay in the eurozone ... or return to the drachma. That is the choice."
The measures will pile more pain on the Greeks, who have suffered wave after wave of spending cuts and tax hikes since their government revealed in 2009 that public debt was actually far higher than officially declared.
On Wednesday, hundreds of rioters hurled rocks and gasoline bombs at lines of police guarding Parliament, who responded with volleys of tear gas and stun grenades, and the first use of water cannon in Greece in years.
Some in the 80,000-strong demonstration, which braved sometimes torrential rain, ran for cover as running battles broke out with police on the second day of a 48-hour general strike. Clouds of tear gas rose from Syntagma Square.
The austerity package is expected to scrape through when the vote is held later in the night. But any defections or abstentions could severely weaken the conservative-led coalition formed in June.
"Today we face the most critical decision any government has taken in the past 37 years," Samaras said. "Many of these measures are fair and should have been taken years ago, without anyone asking us to.
"Others are unfair ? cutting wages and salaries ? and there is no point in dressing this up as something else," he said, adding that the country was, however, obliged to take them.
The alternative is bankruptcy, triggering financial chaos as the country would likely have to leave the 17-country euro bloc.
"The alternative is much worse than any of these measures," said Samaras.
The government combined has 176 of Parliament's 300 seats, and needs a simple majority of those present to pass the bill. Without the Democratic Left, which has said it will vote against, Samaras' conservatives and the Socialists control 160 votes. However, there is a threat of more dissenters, particularly from the Socialist party.
Greece's next bailout loan installment of ?31.5 billion, out of a total of ?240 billion, is already five months overdue. Without it, Samaras says, Greece will run out of money on Nov. 16.
If Athens cannot raise sufficient funds otherwise, it will quickly find it impossible to pay its huge debts. As well as pushing the country out of the euro, this could trigger a nightmare of bank runs, hyperinflation and currency depreciation that would vaporize savings and put many basic goods out of the reach of many Greeks.
The measures are for 2013-14 and include new, deep pension cuts and tax hikes, a two-year increase in the retirement age to 67, and laws that will make it easier to fire and transfer civil servants who are currently guaranteed jobs for life.
The reforms aim to lower public debts but will in the process also hurt the economy, which is set to enter a sixth year of recession with unemployment at a record 25 percent.
"You are throwing people onto to the street, people who need a few more years till they get their pensions," said Panagiotis Lafazanis of the main opposition Syriza, or Radical Left, party. "What will happen to them? Will they starve? ... This is an illegal and unconstitutional law."
Opposition parties accused the government of trampling on Greece's constitution with the proposed cuts in pensions and benefits, and complained that the bill, several hundred pages long, was too complex to be debated in a single session.
Meanwhile, judges in the country's Supreme Court ruled that new cuts to their own pay contained in the draft bill were illegal.
Socialist MP Theodora Tzakri verbally shredded the bill, but said she was forced to back it as Greece had no other way of raising the funds it needs.
"The recession has exceeded every limit, and not only is no light visible at the end but we are still at the beginning of the crisis," Tzakri said. "I will vote for the measures with a gun to my forehead."
Greece's main trade association warned that the new cutbacks would further reduce consumer and government spending, driving more retailers out of business.
"To vote for the measures ... will deal the coup de grace to an exhausted and battered society," association head Vassilis Korkidis said.
Lawmakers interrupted Wednesday's debate as Parliament employees went on strike to protest cuts to their wages that Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras brought in a last-minute amendment to the bill. Stournaras later withdrew the amendment, and the tempestuous debate resumed after Parliament employees returned to work.
While Samaras has been facing increasing pressure at home, other members of the eurozone have been doing what they can to ensure Greece stays in the currency group. Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel, for example, has softened her tough stance ? paving the way for a deal to give Greece more time to meet its loan conditions.
Even if Parliament approves the draft legislation, it is unlikely that Greece will receive the next bailout installment in time for Samaras' Nov. 16 deadline. The payment was expected to be approved at a meeting of European finance ministers on Monday Nov. 12.
However, the ministers' vote hinges on a report by the so-called troika of austerity inspectors from the European Union, IMF and European Central bank, which may not be ready in time. Furthermore, some eurozone countries can only give the go-ahead after their own Parliaments have voted on it. Germany is not expected to do so before Nov. 19.
As a result, the EU or ECB may have to step in with some interim financing.
The 48-hour general strike against the bill shut down the public administration, left hospitals functioning on emergency staff and closed schools and tax offices. All ferry and train schedules have been canceled until Thursday, flights were disrupted by a four-hour air traffic controllers' strike and Athens was without public transport for most of the day.
The country's biggest union has also called for a demonstration on Sunday evening, when the 2013 state budget is due to be voted on.

It?s every little girl?s dream to become a real-life Cinderella, from strutting in a shimmering dress to the magnificent application of makeup. Two 9-year-old princesses hailing from Newport Beach are helping to make that dream a reality for CHOC oncology patients. In mid-January, they will host an event at CHOC in which girls ages 4 ? 18 can play dress-up to bring out their inner princess. Each girl will be given the opportunity to have her makeup done and pick out a dress. ?I?m so proud that the idea we had to help other kids in need has turned into reality,? Alyssa says. ?It feels good to be connected to others from my heart and watch our idea come to life.? What a truly wonderful way to give self-esteem back to these young women who may have lost hope. On Monday, the World Series of Poker?s October Nine reconvened after a three-month hiatus to do battle for the $8.5m main event payday. Seven hours later, the field had been whittled down to three: Greg Merson is chip leader with a stack of 88.35m chips, followed by Jesse Sylvia with 62.75m and 21-year-old Jacob Balsiger short-stacked at 46.875m. A Balsiger win would make him the WSOP?s youngest ever main event champ, but Merson was looking like the man of the hour on Monday. Will his momentum hold when the trio retake their seats Tuesday? ESPN will be carrying 15-minute delayed coverage starting at 6pm local time.
In other WSOP news, the $1m buy-in Big One For One Drop event will have its second go-round at the 2014 WSOP. Antonio Esfandiari won this summer?s inaugural Big One For One Drop event, collecting a whopping $18.35m for his troubles. To tide players over until 2014, Lalibert? announced the 2013 WSOP would feature a new event, the Little One For One Drop, a $1,111 buy-in with unlimited re-entries over two starting days. Lalibert? was inducted into the American Gaming Association?s Gaming Hall of Fame last week.

Following a three-hour heads-up battle, Pietnoczko settled for ?56.5k, while Ronan Gilligan took ?35k for finishing third.
Even further away from the Rio, 345 players showed up at the Crown Casino to contest the 2012 PokerStars.net Australia New Zealand Poker Tour (ANZPT) Melbourne main event. The title went to semi-pro player Paul Hockin, who earned $101k for defeating Ashley Warner heads-up. However, due to a three-way deal, Warner (who held a deceptively comfortable chip-lead at the time) ended up with $130k, while Michael Guzzardi earned $112k. But hey? a deal?s a deal.
Finally, Taiwan?s Raymond Wu has won the first event at the 2012 Asia Championship of Poker (ACOP) at the Grand Waldo Casino in Macau. Wu earned H$419k (US $54k) for outlasting 191 other players at the HK $10k Deepstack Championship. The UK?s Iqbal Ahmed was runner-up, earning HK $282k while Korea?s Vivian Im took third and $171k.
