MIAMI -- This was not the revolution the tea party had in mind.
Four years ago, the movement and its potent mix of anger and populism persuaded thousands of conservatives to protest the deficit and President Barack Obama's health care law.
The tea party swept a crop of no-compromise lawmakers into Congress and governor's offices and transformed political up-and-comers, including Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, into household names.
But as many tea party stars seek re-election next year and Rubio considers a 2016 presidential run, conservative activists are finding themselves at a crossroads.
Many of their standard-bearers have embraced more moderate positions on bedrock issues such as immigration and health care, broadening their appeal in swing states but dampening grass-roots passion.

Opening statement:
?I?m not going to go through a couple of the guys that went down until I find out. I will give you something Monday, when we are back in the afternoon. Overall, I thought the tempo was good against each other. There is kind of a fine line. You want to be healthy, yet you still want to see some full speed action. I think they handled that well. I thought defensively, we made some good plays. We had some turnovers. There were a few false starts, (and) some pre-snap penalties that we have to get cleaned up. This will be good film for our staff to evaluate and for the players to see when they come back in Monday. But we received enough snaps. It started getting warm, but I thought they battled the heat pretty well.?
It looks like the running game usually got positive yardage.
?One of the things we wanted to look at was two or three specific type runs. We were able to get about 12 to 15 snaps and some of those slash plays. I thought defensively they did a pretty good job. If we got into the second and long or third and longs, there are chances there were a minus play or, like I alluded to earlier, a penalty. I thought there was some good plays made on both side of the ball, and I thought we got good work, so I was pleased with that.?
Looking at the running game. You look in the past,
?Yes, he is one player (who has produced), and we read our players last night with the scouts. We went through 89 guys, maybe a little bit less than that. A couple of the guys haven?t practiced. We kind of just went through how things have been going, up to date, with training camp, and he is a player that we felt has really come around, mentally. In the spring, for a rookie, small school guy, there was a lot on his plate, but I feel like he is beginning to pick things up. He is explosive, and he can run. One of his strengths would be just his natural running ability. The area that he has gotten better yet is just the protections, understanding who to get, who to block, some of the nuances that comes with playing running back in this offense. I thought he made some pretty good runs out here. That wasn?t surprising, and I do think that he will be a guy in the preseason will have an ample opportunity in games to carry the football.?
I know
?Yeah he is playing one of those outside backer positions. I thought he had some good rush snaps. We will see on the film when we get a chance to look more specifically, but he is explosive and he is a big part of what we are planning on doing with the two outside guys.?
Overall, on the defense, five sacks and two picks, and a fumble recovery were recorded unofficially. How do you feel about that?
?I was pleased with the turnovers. That is something that we have been emphasizing. I thought they took advantage of those snaps. I had the officials blowing an early whistle. That can be a positive. It goes both ways. I felt like that was the way to go with the tempo we had. I thought we rushed the passer well, at times, and probably got into some long yardage situations a little bit too much for us, offensively. I was pleased with that element.?
One of the things that you said you wanted to look at was left tackle. What did you see?
?I want to watch the tape, first, because I am watching it from the sideline, and there is no way to really evaluate it until you get a chance to look at the video.?
Are you headed up to Canton today? Just talk about how excited you are to get up there and see your mentor get inducted.
?It is a special place. A year ago, we had a Saint (William Roaf) go in, and Cortez Kennedy who we knew went in. When someone that is close to you, or someone that has been a part of your career, is going into the Hall of Fame, it is pretty special. It becomes a little bit more meaningful. Obviously, Bill (Parcells) was someone that really helped me a lot in my career. To this date, I talk with him pretty frequently. I am excited for him and just (excited) to be there to help celebrate with him.?
It seems like
?Well, he is powerful. He has good size, (and) long arms. He is continuing to improve and really work on the little things. Using his hands better and shedding. For him, there are a lot of snaps that he is behind compared to a lot of these players who played a lot more football up until the point when they got here. That being said, he is powerful, he is very strong. He is something that his explosiveness is something that you can notice on film. It is just now the small things, the detailing, pad level, use of hands and where he is placing them and how he is taking on blocks. That is the one thing that he is continuing to work on.?
Did you think
?Yes, he seemed to be around the ball. He is a veteran player who has real good instincts, so it is not surprising. Nonetheless, he found himself around the football a bunch.?
Is this kind of a breakthrough for him today?
?Well, I don?t know if it?s a breakthrough. He is a veteran player in our league, so he has played quite a bit, but it was a good scrimmage.?
What about
?It looked solid. It looked like he ran with good pad level. Again, when we look at the tape, we will have the chance to see the decisions that they made. I said this at the beginning, but I think that the tape will be valuable for the players and coaches. It is the first bit of film that we are looking at where they are really cutting loose, and we get a chance to see what a play gained or what it didn?t gain. So, that will be helpful.?
Did the run blocking make it seem like the running backs can hit the line of scrimmage with some momentum?
?We will see when we look at the tape.?

Someday...this could be a booze-mobile. A U.S. Postal service employee leaves the loading dock to deliver mail from the Los Feliz Post Office on February 6, 2013 in Los Angeles, California.
Special delivery from the post office ? beer, wine and spirits, if Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe has his way.?
In an interview with The Associated Press, Donahoe said Thursday delivery of alcoholic beverages is on his wish list as the agency considers ways to raise revenue and save money after losing $16 billion last year. He also said he endorses ending most door-to-door and Saturday mail deliveries as a way to help stabilize the service's finances.?
Donahoe said delivering alcohol has the potential to raise as much as $50 million a year. He mentioned how customers might want to, for example, mail bottles of wine home when they tour vineyards. Donahoe said his agency has looked at the possibility of using special boxes that would hold two, four or six bottles and ship for a flat-rate anywhere in the country.?
"There's a lot of money to be made in shipping beer, wine and spirits," Donahoe said. "We'd like to be in that business."?
The Postal Service says mailing alcoholic beverages is currently restricted by law. Customers are even told to cover any logos or labels if they use alcoholic beverage boxes for shipments.?
The agency is also urging changes in how it delivers the mail. A House committee has passed legislation to stabilize the Postal Service's ailing finances that would cut letter deliveries to five days and phase out door-to-door deliveries over 10 years. The bill does not include a provision to allow the agency to deliver alcohol.?
The Senate passed a postal reform bill last year that included a provision allowing the agency to deliver alcohol. The bill would require that such shipments would have to comply with any state laws where the shipment originated and was delivered. The measure also said the recipient would have to be at least 21 years old and would need to provide valid, government-issued photo identification upon delivery.?
The agency faces $15 billion in losses this year and is working toward restructuring its retail, delivery and mail processing operations.?
"We don't want to take any more debt on," Donahoe said. "We want to be able to get profitable, pay it down, just like any other business would, so that you stay strong for the future."?
The service's losses are largely due to a decline in mail volume and a congressional requirement that it make advance payments to cover expected health care costs for future retirees. About $11.1 billion of last year's losses were due to the health care payments.?
Donahoe said over the last decade, the mail volume at his agency's trademark blue boxes has dropped 60 percent.?
"That's our most profitable mail," he said. "That will continue to drop off because people pay bills online. And we understand that, it's easy, it's free, and so we have to continue to make changes."?
On a bright note, Donahoe said the volume of packages the service handles has grown considerably in recent years, a trend he expects to continue.?
The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee recently approved a plan for the service to gradually shift from door delivery to cluster box and curbside delivery, which includes mailboxes at the end of driveways. The agency has been moving toward curbside and cluster box delivery in new residential developments since the 1970s.?
About 1 in 3 mail customers has door-to-door delivery. Some lawmakers have complained that ending home delivery in many densely developed urban areas would be difficult and pose hardships for many people, including the elderly and places where the weather can be harsh.?
"We'd work with the communities," Donahoe said, adding there would be special hardship exemptions for those physically unable to get their mail at centralized locations. "We want to figure out how to do it so people don't get mad."?
Donahoe said there are ways to install centralized mail boxes that fit in well with the neighborhood and also don't cause a lot of hardship for customers.?
Some 30 million residential addresses receive delivery to boxes at the door or a mail slot. Another 87 million residential addresses receive curbside or cluster box delivery.?
Door-to-door delivery costs the agency about $350 per year, on average. Curbside delivery costs average $224 per year for each address, while cluster box delivery averages $160.?
The service earlier this year backpedaled on its plan to end Saturday mail delivery after running into opposition in Congress. It has tried repeatedly and unsuccessfully over the past several years to persuade Congress to approve ending Saturday mail delivery.?
The National Association of Letter Carriers has said ending Saturday delivery would in particular hurt rural residents and the elderly who depend more heavily on the mail for prescription drugs and other goods. Donahoe said there would be a six-month implementation period to help smooth out any problems and that medicines would still be delivered on Saturdays.?
The Senate last year passed a bill that would have stopped the Postal Service from eliminating Saturday service for at least two years and required it to try two years of cost-cutting instead. The House didn't pass a bill.?

Rating: PG-13, for combat violence and martial arts action throughout, and for brief sensuality and language.
It's a big, dumb action movie that knows it's a big, dumb action movie -- which, in theory, makes this sequel preferable in some ways to big, dumb action movies that are under that delusion that they're serious art. This is an astonishingly violent PG-13 movie. There's an insane amount of gunfire, much of which comes courtesy of Bruce Willis as a retired Joe who cheerily shares the arsenal he's hidden in his quiet, suburban home. But none of the casualties from all this sophisticated weaponry results in any blood. This being a big-studio blockbuster based on a toy, nothing really matters -- even he obliteration of a major world city with the touch of a button.

Guardian columnist Hadley Freeman, Independent columnist Grace Dent and Europe editor of Time magazine Catherine Mayer all received the tweet which Dent took a screen grab of and posted for her Twitter followers to see.
It was from anonymous user @98JU98U989, and said: "A BOMB HAS BEEN PLACED OUTSIDE YOUR HOME. IT WILL GO OFF AT EXACTLY 10.47PM ON A TIMER AND TRIGGER DESTROYING EVERYTHING".
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "We can confirm that the MPS has received allegations relating to bomb threats sent to a number of females on Twitter."
The spokesman said enquiries are continuing and so far there have been no arrests.
After receiving the threat, Freeman said on Twitter that she was calling the police, adding: "If it's illegal to threaten to bomb an airport, it's illegal to threaten to bomb me."
Dent described the threat as a "new low".
Meanwhile, over 100,000 people have signed a petition calling on Twitter to beef up its procedures for dealing with abuse after a feminist campaigner and a female MP were targeted. Caroline Criado Perez and Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy have complained about receiving vicious tweets on the site in the past week.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said a 25-year-old man arrested by Northumbria Police on suspicion of harassment was released on bail.
Twitter has announced plans to include a button for reporting abuse within every tweet - something which is already available on its iPhone app. But critics argue this does not go far enough and only directs users to the existing reporting form which, they claim, is too long and impractical.

The feud between two potential GOP presidential contenders escalated today as Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie traded barbs about "pork" and "bacon" throughout the day.
In an interview on CNN's "The Situation Room" with Wolf Blitzer, Paul nicknamed Christie the "King of Bacon" after the New Jersey governor accused him of engaging in "pork barrel spending."
"This is the king of bacon talking about bacon," Paul said.
"It's not helping the party for him to pick a war with me. It's a big mistake. It's not very smart. And it's not a good way to grow the party," Paul said."Why would he want to pick a fight with the one guy who has a chance to grow the party by appealing to the youth and appealing to people who would like to see a more moderate and less aggressive foreign policy?"
At a news conference earlier in the day, Christie said Kentucky takes more federal funding than New Jersey and argued that Paul should examine his pursuit of "pork barrel spending" when finding ways to cut spending.
"If Senator Paul wants to start looking at where he's going to cut spending to afford defense, maybe he should start looking, cutting the pork barrel spending that he brings home to Kentucky," Christie said. "Maybe Senator Paul could, you know, deal with that when he's trying to deal with the reduction of spending on the federal side, but I doubt he would, because most Washington politicians only care about bringing home the bacon so they can get re-elected.
"I have nothing personal against Senator Paul. If we disagree on certain issues, we disagree. It's seeming his response seems to be he has something personal against me, but that's OK. He's just getting lined on that front," he said.
The feud between the two GOP lawmakers started last week when Christie warned of the potential dangers of the "libertarianism" espoused by Paul, an outspoken critic of the National Security Agency, and some of his Republican colleagues regarding matters of national security.
"I just want us to be really cautious because this strain of libertarianism going through both parties right now and making big headlines I think is a very dangerous thought," Christie said Thursday night at an Aspen Institute panel of Republican governors in Colorado.
"These esoteric intellectual debates, I want them to come to New Jersey and sit in front of the widows and the orphans and have that conversation," Christie, 50, said, in a reference to people who lost family members in the Sept. 11 terror attacks. "And they won't, because that's a much tougher conversation to have."
Paul, 50, extended the tiff this weekend by bashing Christie for his call for federal funding after Hurricane Sandy last year.
"They're precisely the same people who are unwilling to cut the spending, and their 'Gimme, gimme, gimme, give me all my Sandy money now,'" Paul told reporters Sunday in Kentucky. "Those are the people who are bankrupting the government and not letting enough money be left over for national defense."
On Monday, Paul ripped into Christie for using "the cloak of 9/11 victims" to criticize the Kentucky senator's views on national security.
"It's really, I think, kind of sad and cheap that he would use the cloak of 9/11 victims and say, 'I'm the only one who cares about these victims.' Hogwash," Paul said in a FOX News interview Monday night. "If he cared about protecting this country, maybe he wouldn't be in this 'give me, give me, give me all of the money' that you have in Washington or don't have and he would be a little more fiscally responsive and know the way we defend our country, the way we have enough money for national defense is by being frugal."
Both Republican lawmakers are considered likely presidential candidates for 2016, and as the two ripped into each other this week, one other potential presidential hopeful has picked a side in the fight. In a FOX News interview Monday, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said he's willing to stand with Paul in the spat with Christie.
"I'm proud to stand side by side with Rand Paul," Cruz said. "He and I have been fighting over and over and over again in the Senate to defend our constitutional liberties.
"I'll say this, some of this tiff, Governor Christie is entitled to his views, he's entitled to express his views, I think most Americans don't care about politicians bickering in Washington," he said. "They don't care about the egos, and the battles that will happen in the beltway. What they're interested in is solving the problems that we've got here."

Pat Robertson says that gay people are willing to destroy the church, the military, businesses, and marriage itself, all to gain affirmation for ?the way they do sex.? The octogenarian multi-millionaire televangelist says loving Christians are required to try to stem ?sexual immorality,? and thus required to stop gay people from being gay.
Gay people, Robertson falsely states, are ?willing to destroy the church if need be, then to destroy the military if need be, then to destroy marriage if need be, then to destroy businesses if need be,? in order to have an affirmation of the fact that the way they perform sex acts is acceptable by the society.?
Ironically, Robertson says he worries Christians will be jailed for these acts of ?love.? Fundamentalist and evangelical Christians, from the American Family Association?s Bryan Fischer to Virginia gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli have called for the jailing of gay people for their acts of love too, waging campaigns to jail Americans for having same-sex sex.
?If you see somebody who is not going to go to Heaven and you really love him you want to do what it takes to get him into Heaven, if you don?t care about him you let him go to Hell,? Robertson said. ?We are people who love, and yet now your love is going to put you in jail, because the people who are going to Hell through their lifestyle think, ?well, we want to be affirmed.??

PARIS (AP) ? Wearing a scarf to mask his face, the gunman sneaked into the posh Cannes hotel and held up a diamond show as three security guards looked on, then fled on foot about a minute later. In the end, he made off with a breathtaking $136 million worth of valuables ? the biggest jewelry heist in years, maybe ever.
It was a French Riviera robbery that might make Hollywood scriptwriters smile. And it even happened at a hotel that was featured in Alfred Hitchcock's jewel-encrusted thriller "To Catch a Thief."
On Monday, a state prosecutor provided new details about the brazen heist a day earlier at the Carlton Intercontinental hotel ? not least that the loot was actually worth more than twice the ?40 million ($53 million) estimate that police had first announced.
The noontime caper Sunday along the town's seaside promenade, La Croisette ? a playground for the rich and famous, sunbathing tourists, and most notably, world cinema stars every year ? looked set to dwarf the value of two other jewelry thefts in the Riviera during the Cannes Film Festival in May.
It also could eclipse two other massive heists over the last decade. In 2008, thieves ? some dressed as women ? stole $118 million in rings, necklaces and luxury watches from the Harry Winston store in Paris. A robbery five years earlier at Belgium's Antwerp Diamond Center netted an estimated $100 million.
Philippe Vique, assistant prosecutor in the nearby town of Grasse, said the show's Dubai-based organizer ? whom he would not identify ? had carried out a more complete inventory of the jewelry by Monday, and came up with the $136 million figure.
In a telephone interview with The Associated Press, Vique described a canny, quick and logistically simple break-in.
So far, the suspect is believed to have acted alone. He wore a scarf, cap and gloves, and somehow got into the ground-floor showroom through the hotel's French doors, which open out onto a terrace on the Croisette ? not the main entrance.
The suspect then held up the show participants with a handgun, took the valuables, and fled through a side door onto a perpendicular street.
"He took a bag containing a briefcase and a small box," Vique said. Rings, earrings and pendants were inside the bag. "He left on foot ... it was very fast."
As the suspect exited through the side door in his getaway, a few jewels spilled out of the bag and were quickly recovered.
The holdup itself took about a minute ? with three private security guards, two vendors, and a show manager on hand, Vique said. No customers were present at the time, and no police were deployed at the hotel.
"This was a private event ? so it had private security," the prosecutor said. It was not immediately clear whether the security guards were armed.
"I wouldn't say it was easily done ? opening a locked door," Vique said, wondering: "Why was he able to open this door?"
The jewelry was part of a summertime display centering on the prestigious Leviev diamond house, owned by Israeli billionaire Lev Leviev. It was to run until the end of August.
The show was hardly low-key. Large banners adorned with pictures of diamond rings or necklaces over Leviev's rose-themed background were draped over the street-front terrace on the Croisette.
A Leviev spokesman declined to comment. A day earlier, the company issued a statement saying its officials were cooperating with authorities and were relieved that no one was injured in the robbery.
The Carlton, in a statement, confirmed the robbery had happened and said none of its employees or guests "were involved in or affected by the incident." The hotel said it was cooperating with police and would not comment further on the criminal investigation.
Vique said French authorities were pursuing all possible leads ? which he would not describe ? and reviewing surveillance video footage, notably from cameras put in place by Cannes municipal authorities. But he said there was no indication so far that the suspect had links to any organized crime group.
Scott Andrew Selby, co-author of "Flawless: Inside the Largest Diamond Heist in History," about the 2003 Antwerp heist, said initial estimates of jewel heists are often wrong: He believes that the safe-deposit box theft in Belgium actually brought in $400 million to $500 million.
Selby said he doubted the Cannes culprit was working alone, because the quick-in, quick-out operation seemed professional, "and people who know what they're doing operate in teams." He said Cannes was particularly tempting to high-end jewel thieves who are looking for a "soft target."
"Cannes is an amazing place to rob because you have this stuff coming in just for temporary sales," he said.
The Carlton, a Cannes fixture which is celebrating its centennial this year, featured in Hitchcock's "To Catch a Thief," which starred Grace Kelly as an heiress and Cary Grant as a reformed burglar chasing a jewel thief.
Fiction aside, it's not the first time the hotel has dealt with jewelry theft: In 1994, machine-gun-toting thieves stole $45 million in gems there.

In order to isolate, study and efficiently treat a bacterial outbreak, it is vital to be able to grow, store and identify the particular strains of bacteria that cause the disease. While this can be a fairly simple task in a well stocked laboratory, it?s a lot harder to achieve out in the field, in tropical or rural areas without access to much laboratory equipment or a reliable electricity supply. New techniques for working in an electricity-free environment are therefore both interesting and very important for the treatment of tropical bacterial diseases.
A recent paper looks at how the bacteria Salmonella enterica can be cultured and strain-identified in an environment with limited resources. Rather than using a conventional incubator, the researchers used an insulated container (previously used as a vaccine storage box!) and little ?phase-change packets? to control the temperature. These packets contain a substance that?maintains a temperature of 38?C while changing from its liquid form back to a solid.
Once incubated, the culture bottles were checked every day for the discolouration of a carbon dioxide indicator placed on the bottom of the bottle, to check that they were still alive and growing. The incubator was then re-filled with fresh packets and all growing cultures placed back inside. This process was repeated for seven days.
In the comparison group the cultures were placed in an electrical incubator set to thirty seven degrees. After the seven days, samples from both methods were tested using standard biochemical methods. To further explore just how long these cultured bacteria would survive at room temperature, samples from the bottles were re-grown for a week under both conditions (electrical incubator and phase-change packets) and then left at room temperature, tested every week for bacterial survival.
From the 65 individuals with confirmed enteric fever, 55 (84.6%) were identified by the conventional blood culture and 60 (92.3%) were identified by the experimental method. The overall percentage of agreement between the two methods was?94.4% (for the statistically minded the 95% confidence intervals were?91.2%?96.7%). The bacteria left at room temperature were found to survive for at least six months without the addition of any further nutrients or media.
The phage-change packet incubators therefore seem to work just as well as conventional electrical ones, despite the slight temperature decreases caused by change-over of the packets. Anyone who has worked in a lab will have had nightmares about power-cuts to the incubator (and fridges left open!) but in the front lines of tropical disease research this is an everyday reality in rural or isolated areas.
As well as electricity supply, the other consideration for working in such areas is of course the cost. The phase-change incubator came out at $50 for the incubator / packets and $2.30 per bottle (including carbon-dioxide sensor). The researchers are therefore currently working on the production of a lower cost bottle which incorporates a colour-changing growth incubator. They also point out that cheaper or locally produced versions of the phage-change packets could be sought, and the practice of putting them into an empty box has not been patented.

Just because Kate Moss is approaching her forties doesn't mean she's slowing down... or covering up. This year, we've seen a clothesless campaign for Versace, a clothesless campaign for self-tanner and now, a near-naked, bejeweled Moss on the cover of Esquire UK.
For her first appearance on the front of a men's magazine in 17 years (her last was Arena, in 1996), Kate covers up (in comparison to her latest works, at least) in a sheer, bedazzled bodysuit bearing artfully placed oversized crystals. The theme of Esquire's September issue is "Made In Britain" -- and who better to represent the UK than their supermodel crown jewel?
"For too long [Kate Moss] has been monopolised by women?s fashion magazines," Esquire editor Alex Bilmes says. "So I am thrilled that we?ve persuaded her to front our special issue dedicated to this country?s most stylish people and products. I really can?t imagine anyone better suited to the job."
Neither can we. Take a look at Kate's blinged-out bod below. Get comfortable in guys' eyelines again, Kate: We hear she'll be covering another legendary men's magazine soon.

Zogby said Vargas then ran through the building, firing "at random, in a very irrational fashion."
"He kept running from us as he fired at us, and we fired at him," Zogby said.
He forced his way into another apartment and took two people hostage at gunpoint.
Ester Lazcano, who lives two doors down from where the shooting began, said she was in the shower when she heard the first shots, then there were at least a dozen more.
"I felt the shots," she said.
Miriam Valdes, 70, lives on the building's top floor ? one floor above where the shooting began. She said she heard gunfire and later saw smoke and what smelled like burned plastic entering her apartment, and ran in fear to the unit across the hall.
A crisis team was able to briefly establish communication with Vargas. Sgt. Eddie Rodriguez said negotiators and a police special weapons and tactics team tried talking with him from the other side of the door of the unit where he held the hostages.
Valdes said she heard about eight officers talking with him as she stayed holed up at the neighbouring apartment. She said officers told him to "let these people out."
"We're going to help you," she said they told him.
She said the gunman first asked for his girlfriend and then his mother but refused to cooperate.
Rodriguez said the talks eventually "just fell apart." Officers stormed the building, fatally shooting the gunman in an exchange of gunfire.
"They made the decision to go in there and save and rescue the hostages," Rodriguez said. Both hostages survived.
Neighbours said the shooter lived in the building with his mother. Police don't believe she was home at the time of the shootings.
"He was a good son," Lazcano said. "He'd take her in the morning to run errands" and took her to doctor appointments.
But Valdes said he was known as a difficult person who sometimes got into fights and yelled at his mother.
"He was a very abusive person," she said. "He didn't have any friends there."
Zogby said police are investigating any possible disputes between Vargas and the building manager but don't yet have any information on a possible motive. "Nobody seems to know why he acted the way he acted," Zogby said.
He said police had not responded to any prior calls at his home or found any criminal background on Vargas.
On Saturday, Agustin Hernandez ? the brother-in-law of victim Niebles ? moved his relatives' things out of the apartment building and into his car. Among them were several photos, one showing the teen smiling in a red graduation gown, another of his sister-in-law in a white dress and pearls.
Hernandez said Simono was a friend of the building manager.
Police didn't identify the slain teen, but Hernandez's wife, Zulima Niebles, said her name was Priscila Perez.
Marcela Chavarri, director of the American Christian School, said Perez was about to enter her senior year at the school.
"She was a lovely girl," Chavarri said through tears. "She was always happy and helping her classmates."
In Hialeah ? a suburb of about 230,000 residents, about three-quarters of whom are Cuban or Cuban-American ? the street in the quiet, apartment-building-lined neighbourhood was still blocked by tape Saturday afternoon.
The building where the standoff occurred is an ageing, beige structure with an open terrace in the middle. It has 90 to 95 units. The apartment where neighbours said the shooting started was charred, the door and ceiling immediately outside burned black.
Zogby called the whole building a crime scene. "He probably fired dozens of shots during the whole incident," he said.
"It could have been a much, much more dangerous situation."
