Victoria Advocate | TENNIS TODAY: East, West tennis gearing up for ...

Victoria West will travel to Kingsville on Thursday and Victoria East is off until April 3, the district tournament tune up, while Goliad is hosting its spring tournament. These tournaments feature just about all of the teams in the Crossroads. St. Joseph varsity girls and boys are travelling to Austin for their pre-district TAPPS tournament. VISD middle schools will be travelling to Beeville on Saturday for their annual tournament, and Goliad is hosting their junior varsity tournament as well. There will be some competitive tennis this weekend as teams prepare for district tournament play and beyond.

Next week, Goliad has their JV and varsity district tournament in Aransas Pass on March 26 and 27, while Victoria West is hosting a quad meet with St. Joseph, Wharton and Calhoun.

What we are starting to see happen already is a genuine interest among some of the kids who are not full-time tennis players at the present but are becoming more interested. Some are athletic enough and have enough tennis background to fill in right away. Perhaps their basketball, soccer or track season has ended.

So now they make a little room for tennis.

Which is great because they get further exposed to the game that some of us have devoted our entire careers to. Now, our goal as teaching professionals is to keep them interested and more engaged and continue teaching them tennis fundamentals, cross training and how all sports in one way or another lend themselves to each other.

A tennis program through the parks and recreation program, a country club or a high school team is not built around one or two individuals. Rather, it is built around many players that can give any program the depth it has to have. That's what we are all hoping is coming to the Crossroads.

See you on the courts.
