Police probe Twitter bomb threats

Guardian columnist Hadley Freeman, Independent columnist Grace Dent and Europe editor of Time magazine Catherine Mayer all received the tweet which Dent took a screen grab of and posted for her Twitter followers to see.

It was from anonymous user @98JU98U989, and said: "A BOMB HAS BEEN PLACED OUTSIDE YOUR HOME. IT WILL GO OFF AT EXACTLY 10.47PM ON A TIMER AND TRIGGER DESTROYING EVERYTHING".

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "We can confirm that the MPS has received allegations relating to bomb threats sent to a number of females on Twitter."

The spokesman said enquiries are continuing and so far there have been no arrests.

After receiving the threat, Freeman said on Twitter that she was calling the police, adding: "If it's illegal to threaten to bomb an airport, it's illegal to threaten to bomb me."

Dent described the threat as a "new low".

Meanwhile, over 100,000 people have signed a petition calling on Twitter to beef up its procedures for dealing with abuse after a feminist campaigner and a female MP were targeted. Caroline Criado Perez and Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy have complained about receiving vicious tweets on the site in the past week.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said a 25-year-old man arrested by Northumbria Police on suspicion of harassment was released on bail.

Twitter has announced plans to include a button for reporting abuse within every tweet - something which is already available on its iPhone app. But critics argue this does not go far enough and only directs users to the existing reporting form which, they claim, is too long and impractical.

Rand Paul Calls Christie 'King of Bacon'

The feud between two potential GOP presidential contenders escalated today as Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie traded barbs about "pork" and "bacon" throughout the day.

In an interview on CNN's "The Situation Room" with Wolf Blitzer, Paul nicknamed Christie the "King of Bacon" after the New Jersey governor accused him of engaging in "pork barrel spending."

"This is the king of bacon talking about bacon," Paul said.

"It's not helping the party for him to pick a war with me. It's a big mistake. It's not very smart. And it's not a good way to grow the party," Paul said."Why would he want to pick a fight with the one guy who has a chance to grow the party by appealing to the youth and appealing to people who would like to see a more moderate and less aggressive foreign policy?"

At a news conference earlier in the day, Christie said Kentucky takes more federal funding than New Jersey and argued that Paul should examine his pursuit of "pork barrel spending" when finding ways to cut spending.

"If Senator Paul wants to start looking at where he's going to cut spending to afford defense, maybe he should start looking, cutting the pork barrel spending that he brings home to Kentucky," Christie said. "Maybe Senator Paul could, you know, deal with that when he's trying to deal with the reduction of spending on the federal side, but I doubt he would, because most Washington politicians only care about bringing home the bacon so they can get re-elected.

"I have nothing personal against Senator Paul. If we disagree on certain issues, we disagree. It's seeming his response seems to be he has something personal against me, but that's OK. He's just getting lined on that front," he said.

The feud between the two GOP lawmakers started last week when Christie warned of the potential dangers of the "libertarianism" espoused by Paul, an outspoken critic of the National Security Agency, and some of his Republican colleagues regarding matters of national security.

"I just want us to be really cautious because this strain of libertarianism going through both parties right now and making big headlines I think is a very dangerous thought," Christie said Thursday night at an Aspen Institute panel of Republican governors in Colorado.

"These esoteric intellectual debates, I want them to come to New Jersey and sit in front of the widows and the orphans and have that conversation," Christie, 50, said, in a reference to people who lost family members in the Sept. 11 terror attacks. "And they won't, because that's a much tougher conversation to have."

Paul, 50, extended the tiff this weekend by bashing Christie for his call for federal funding after Hurricane Sandy last year.

"They're precisely the same people who are unwilling to cut the spending, and their 'Gimme, gimme, gimme, give me all my Sandy money now,'" Paul told reporters Sunday in Kentucky. "Those are the people who are bankrupting the government and not letting enough money be left over for national defense."

On Monday, Paul ripped into Christie for using "the cloak of 9/11 victims" to criticize the Kentucky senator's views on national security.

"It's really, I think, kind of sad and cheap that he would use the cloak of 9/11 victims and say, 'I'm the only one who cares about these victims.' Hogwash," Paul said in a FOX News interview Monday night. "If he cared about protecting this country, maybe he wouldn't be in this 'give me, give me, give me all of the money' that you have in Washington or don't have and he would be a little more fiscally responsive and know the way we defend our country, the way we have enough money for national defense is by being frugal."

Both Republican lawmakers are considered likely presidential candidates for 2016, and as the two ripped into each other this week, one other potential presidential hopeful has picked a side in the fight. In a FOX News interview Monday, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said he's willing to stand with Paul in the spat with Christie.

"I'm proud to stand side by side with Rand Paul," Cruz said. "He and I have been fighting over and over and over again in the Senate to defend our constitutional liberties.

"I'll say this, some of this tiff, Governor Christie is entitled to his views, he's entitled to express his views, I think most Americans don't care about politicians bickering in Washington," he said. "They don't care about the egos, and the battles that will happen in the beltway. What they're interested in is solving the problems that we've got here."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Gays Willing To Destroy The Church And Jail Christians For ?The Way They Do Sex? Says Robertson

Post image for Gays Willing To Destroy The Church And Jail Christians For ?The Way They Do Sex? Says Robertson

Pat Robertson says that gay people are willing to destroy the church, the military, businesses, and marriage itself, all to gain affirmation for ?the way they do sex.? The octogenarian multi-millionaire televangelist says loving Christians are required to try to stem ?sexual immorality,? and thus required to stop gay people from being gay.

Gay people, Robertson falsely states, are ?willing to destroy the church if need be, then to destroy the military if need be, then to destroy marriage if need be, then to destroy businesses if need be,? in order to have an affirmation of the fact that the way they perform sex acts is acceptable by the society.?

Ironically, Robertson says he worries Christians will be jailed for these acts of ?love.? Fundamentalist and evangelical Christians, from the American Family Association?s Bryan Fischer to Virginia gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli have called for the jailing of gay people for their acts of love too, waging campaigns to jail Americans for having same-sex sex.

?If you see somebody who is not going to go to Heaven and you really love him you want to do what it takes to get him into Heaven, if you don?t care about him you let him go to Hell,? Robertson said. ?We are people who love, and yet now your love is going to put you in jail, because the people who are going to Hell through their lifestyle think, ?well, we want to be affirmed.??

Official: Cannes diamond heist actually nets $136M

PARIS (AP) ? Wearing a scarf to mask his face, the gunman sneaked into the posh Cannes hotel and held up a diamond show as three security guards looked on, then fled on foot about a minute later. In the end, he made off with a breathtaking $136 million worth of valuables ? the biggest jewelry heist in years, maybe ever.

It was a French Riviera robbery that might make Hollywood scriptwriters smile. And it even happened at a hotel that was featured in Alfred Hitchcock's jewel-encrusted thriller "To Catch a Thief."

On Monday, a state prosecutor provided new details about the brazen heist a day earlier at the Carlton Intercontinental hotel ? not least that the loot was actually worth more than twice the ?40 million ($53 million) estimate that police had first announced.

The noontime caper Sunday along the town's seaside promenade, La Croisette ? a playground for the rich and famous, sunbathing tourists, and most notably, world cinema stars every year ? looked set to dwarf the value of two other jewelry thefts in the Riviera during the Cannes Film Festival in May.

It also could eclipse two other massive heists over the last decade. In 2008, thieves ? some dressed as women ? stole $118 million in rings, necklaces and luxury watches from the Harry Winston store in Paris. A robbery five years earlier at Belgium's Antwerp Diamond Center netted an estimated $100 million.

Philippe Vique, assistant prosecutor in the nearby town of Grasse, said the show's Dubai-based organizer ? whom he would not identify ? had carried out a more complete inventory of the jewelry by Monday, and came up with the $136 million figure.

In a telephone interview with The Associated Press, Vique described a canny, quick and logistically simple break-in.

So far, the suspect is believed to have acted alone. He wore a scarf, cap and gloves, and somehow got into the ground-floor showroom through the hotel's French doors, which open out onto a terrace on the Croisette ? not the main entrance.

The suspect then held up the show participants with a handgun, took the valuables, and fled through a side door onto a perpendicular street.

"He took a bag containing a briefcase and a small box," Vique said. Rings, earrings and pendants were inside the bag. "He left on foot ... it was very fast."

As the suspect exited through the side door in his getaway, a few jewels spilled out of the bag and were quickly recovered.

The holdup itself took about a minute ? with three private security guards, two vendors, and a show manager on hand, Vique said. No customers were present at the time, and no police were deployed at the hotel.

"This was a private event ? so it had private security," the prosecutor said. It was not immediately clear whether the security guards were armed.

"I wouldn't say it was easily done ? opening a locked door," Vique said, wondering: "Why was he able to open this door?"

The jewelry was part of a summertime display centering on the prestigious Leviev diamond house, owned by Israeli billionaire Lev Leviev. It was to run until the end of August.

The show was hardly low-key. Large banners adorned with pictures of diamond rings or necklaces over Leviev's rose-themed background were draped over the street-front terrace on the Croisette.

A Leviev spokesman declined to comment. A day earlier, the company issued a statement saying its officials were cooperating with authorities and were relieved that no one was injured in the robbery.

The Carlton, in a statement, confirmed the robbery had happened and said none of its employees or guests "were involved in or affected by the incident." The hotel said it was cooperating with police and would not comment further on the criminal investigation.

Vique said French authorities were pursuing all possible leads ? which he would not describe ? and reviewing surveillance video footage, notably from cameras put in place by Cannes municipal authorities. But he said there was no indication so far that the suspect had links to any organized crime group.

Scott Andrew Selby, co-author of "Flawless: Inside the Largest Diamond Heist in History," about the 2003 Antwerp heist, said initial estimates of jewel heists are often wrong: He believes that the safe-deposit box theft in Belgium actually brought in $400 million to $500 million.

Selby said he doubted the Cannes culprit was working alone, because the quick-in, quick-out operation seemed professional, "and people who know what they're doing operate in teams." He said Cannes was particularly tempting to high-end jewel thieves who are looking for a "soft target."

"Cannes is an amazing place to rob because you have this stuff coming in just for temporary sales," he said.

The Carlton, a Cannes fixture which is celebrating its centennial this year, featured in Hitchcock's "To Catch a Thief," which starred Grace Kelly as an heiress and Cary Grant as a reformed burglar chasing a jewel thief.

Fiction aside, it's not the first time the hotel has dealt with jewelry theft: In 1994, machine-gun-toting thieves stole $45 million in gems there.

Lab-work without a lab: culturing bacteria in rural areas with limited resources

In order to isolate, study and efficiently treat a bacterial outbreak, it is vital to be able to grow, store and identify the particular strains of bacteria that cause the disease. While this can be a fairly simple task in a well stocked laboratory, it?s a lot harder to achieve out in the field, in tropical or rural areas without access to much laboratory equipment or a reliable electricity supply. New techniques for working in an electricity-free environment are therefore both interesting and very important for the treatment of tropical bacterial diseases.

A recent paper looks at how the bacteria Salmonella enterica can be cultured and strain-identified in an environment with limited resources. Rather than using a conventional incubator, the researchers used an insulated container (previously used as a vaccine storage box!) and little ?phase-change packets? to control the temperature. These packets contain a substance that?maintains a temperature of 38?C while changing from its liquid form back to a solid.

Bottles of culture resting on phase-change packets inside an insulated container. Image from the reference.

Once incubated, the culture bottles were checked every day for the discolouration of a carbon dioxide indicator placed on the bottom of the bottle, to check that they were still alive and growing. The incubator was then re-filled with fresh packets and all growing cultures placed back inside. This process was repeated for seven days.

In the comparison group the cultures were placed in an electrical incubator set to thirty seven degrees. After the seven days, samples from both methods were tested using standard biochemical methods. To further explore just how long these cultured bacteria would survive at room temperature, samples from the bottles were re-grown for a week under both conditions (electrical incubator and phase-change packets) and then left at room temperature, tested every week for bacterial survival.

Example of temperature readings, recorded every five minutes inside the incubator over a period of 72 hours. Red arrows (and the dip in temperature) were caused by the daily change of the phase-change packets. It might look like a big dip, but double-check the scale bar on the left hand side - it's a decrease of about 4 degrees.

From the 65 individuals with confirmed enteric fever, 55 (84.6%) were identified by the conventional blood culture and 60 (92.3%) were identified by the experimental method. The overall percentage of agreement between the two methods was?94.4% (for the statistically minded the 95% confidence intervals were?91.2%?96.7%). The bacteria left at room temperature were found to survive for at least six months without the addition of any further nutrients or media.

The phage-change packet incubators therefore seem to work just as well as conventional electrical ones, despite the slight temperature decreases caused by change-over of the packets. Anyone who has worked in a lab will have had nightmares about power-cuts to the incubator (and fridges left open!) but in the front lines of tropical disease research this is an everyday reality in rural or isolated areas.

As well as electricity supply, the other consideration for working in such areas is of course the cost. The phase-change incubator came out at $50 for the incubator / packets and $2.30 per bottle (including carbon-dioxide sensor). The researchers are therefore currently working on the production of a lower cost bottle which incorporates a colour-changing growth incubator. They also point out that cheaper or locally produced versions of the phage-change packets could be sought, and the practice of putting them into an empty box has not been patented.

Kate Moss' Esquire Cover Is Model's First Men's Magazine Appearance In 17 Years (PHOTOS)

Just because Kate Moss is approaching her forties doesn't mean she's slowing down... or covering up. This year, we've seen a clothesless campaign for Versace, a clothesless campaign for self-tanner and now, a near-naked, bejeweled Moss on the cover of Esquire UK.

For her first appearance on the front of a men's magazine in 17 years (her last was Arena, in 1996), Kate covers up (in comparison to her latest works, at least) in a sheer, bedazzled bodysuit bearing artfully placed oversized crystals. The theme of Esquire's September issue is "Made In Britain" -- and who better to represent the UK than their supermodel crown jewel?

"For too long [Kate Moss] has been monopolised by women?s fashion magazines," Esquire editor Alex Bilmes says. "So I am thrilled that we?ve persuaded her to front our special issue dedicated to this country?s most stylish people and products. I really can?t imagine anyone better suited to the job."

Neither can we. Take a look at Kate's blinged-out bod below. Get comfortable in guys' eyelines again, Kate: We hear she'll be covering another legendary men's magazine soon.

Florida man sets fire to apartment block and kills six in shooting rampage

Zogby said Vargas then ran through the building, firing "at random, in a very irrational fashion."

"He kept running from us as he fired at us, and we fired at him," Zogby said.

He forced his way into another apartment and took two people hostage at gunpoint.

Miami-Dade morgue workers carry a body out of the scene of the fatal shooting in Hialeah, Florida (AP)

Ester Lazcano, who lives two doors down from where the shooting began, said she was in the shower when she heard the first shots, then there were at least a dozen more.

"I felt the shots," she said.

Miriam Valdes, 70, lives on the building's top floor ? one floor above where the shooting began. She said she heard gunfire and later saw smoke and what smelled like burned plastic entering her apartment, and ran in fear to the unit across the hall.

A crisis team was able to briefly establish communication with Vargas. Sgt. Eddie Rodriguez said negotiators and a police special weapons and tactics team tried talking with him from the other side of the door of the unit where he held the hostages.

Valdes said she heard about eight officers talking with him as she stayed holed up at the neighbouring apartment. She said officers told him to "let these people out."

"We're going to help you," she said they told him.

She said the gunman first asked for his girlfriend and then his mother but refused to cooperate.

Rodriguez said the talks eventually "just fell apart." Officers stormed the building, fatally shooting the gunman in an exchange of gunfire.

"They made the decision to go in there and save and rescue the hostages," Rodriguez said. Both hostages survived.

Neighbours said the shooter lived in the building with his mother. Police don't believe she was home at the time of the shootings.

"He was a good son," Lazcano said. "He'd take her in the morning to run errands" and took her to doctor appointments.

But Valdes said he was known as a difficult person who sometimes got into fights and yelled at his mother.

"He was a very abusive person," she said. "He didn't have any friends there."

Zogby said police are investigating any possible disputes between Vargas and the building manager but don't yet have any information on a possible motive. "Nobody seems to know why he acted the way he acted," Zogby said.

He said police had not responded to any prior calls at his home or found any criminal background on Vargas.

On Saturday, Agustin Hernandez ? the brother-in-law of victim Niebles ? moved his relatives' things out of the apartment building and into his car. Among them were several photos, one showing the teen smiling in a red graduation gown, another of his sister-in-law in a white dress and pearls.

Hernandez said Simono was a friend of the building manager.

Police didn't identify the slain teen, but Hernandez's wife, Zulima Niebles, said her name was Priscila Perez.

Marcela Chavarri, director of the American Christian School, said Perez was about to enter her senior year at the school.

"She was a lovely girl," Chavarri said through tears. "She was always happy and helping her classmates."

In Hialeah ? a suburb of about 230,000 residents, about three-quarters of whom are Cuban or Cuban-American ? the street in the quiet, apartment-building-lined neighbourhood was still blocked by tape Saturday afternoon.

The building where the standoff occurred is an ageing, beige structure with an open terrace in the middle. It has 90 to 95 units. The apartment where neighbours said the shooting started was charred, the door and ceiling immediately outside burned black.

Zogby called the whole building a crime scene. "He probably fired dozens of shots during the whole incident," he said.

"It could have been a much, much more dangerous situation."

Aerospace troops begin tactical exercise in Astrakhan region

MOSCOW, July 24 (Itar-Tass) - Air defense units of aerospace troops /VKO/ began a tactical exercise in the Ashuluk range, Astrakhan region, on Wednesday, VKO spokesman Alexei Zolotukhin told Itar-Tass on Wednesday.

"An air defense brigade went on combat duty to protect the aerospace of a guarded facility. During a check of its combat readiness, the brigade?s units successfully rebuffed the attacks by 40 airborne targets of imaginary enemy. Unmanned aerial vehicles were used, among other weapons, in rebuffing the attack," Zolotukhin said.

Initially, air defense units advanced to new positions to carry out the mission, then deployed the equipment and launched continuous radar control to detect and destroy the simulated enemy targets.

"At the final stage of the exercise which involves 500 servicemen, S-300 systems will perform live shooting in heavy jamming conditions to destroy high- and low-altitude targets simulating both aerodynamic and ballistic targets within a whole range of altitudes and velocities," the spokesman said.

Citing financial troubles, University Co-Op asks to sell historic home

Change could be coming to University Co-Op, a historic nonprofit dedicated to serving the University of Texas.

Its executive offices have been housed in the historic Dabney-Horne House at the corner of 23rd and Nueces streets, but financial troubles could prompt a major move.

"The co-op is in dire financial straits," Chief Financial Officer James Kielty said at a Historic Landmark Commission meeting Monday.

The nonprofit?s CFO said that?s why they want to sell the property to developers and move the house to East Austin.

"To sell this property is extremely important to us just to keep the company going in at least the short term," Kietly said at the meeting.

The Travis Central Appraisal District has the property valued at about $738,000?about $70,000 less than just two years ago?but developers are likely to pay more than that.

The city changed rules in 2004 to encourage higher density in West Campus. Since then, high rises continue to sprout in the neighborhood, with more planned.

George Mitchell has led the co-op since 1987, but declined YNN's interview requests.

The nonprofit's main business is selling textbooks and merchandise, but students say they can find better deals elsewhere. Textbook makers are also shifting toward the iPad and tablet market.

"A lot of them are going e-Book, but there is still that option,? Steeves Hopson, a senior at U.T., said. ?Personally, I prefer to actually have the book, but I think it's going away from that."

Austin's Historic Landmark Commission is against the plan to sell the Dabney-Horne House. Commissioners say the home has historical significance where it is.

Solar system's youth gives clues to planet search

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Comets and meteorites contain clues to our solar system's earliest days. But some of the findings are puzzle pieces that don't seem to fit well together. A new set of theoretical models shows how an outburst event in the Sun's formative years could explain some of this disparate evidence. The research could have implications for the hunt for habitable planets outside of our solar system.

Ouch! Beyonce's hair gets caught in stage fan

Celebs

Beyonce's Mrs. Carter World Tour has fans flocking to see her performances, but during a Monday night concert in Montreal, one fan just couldn't get enough of her.

While the singer belted out her hit "Halo," she stepped a little too close to a stage-side wind machine and suddenly found her long, blond locks locked in the blades. But it's likely enough that the other fans at the show ? the ones who paid to get in ? didn't even notice Beyonce's tress distress.

That's because despite the alarming and no doubt painful situation, Beyonce never stopped singing. Sure, she discreetly tugged at her hair a bit ? and welcomed a helping hand from security ? but the show went on without a hitch.

Eventually, Beyonce found relief and later in the evening, she even found the humor in the situation.

After posting a clip of the hair-raising drama on Instagram, the hitmaker revealed an aptly rewritten version of the "Halo" lyrics.

Monday night wasn't the only time a fan tried to steal the show while Beyonce sang "Halo" on the Mrs. Carter tour. In May, the singer turned the microphone on an eager member of the audience (as she often does) and that fan delivered one very big note.

As for the mishap in Montreal, Beyonce's halo of hair seemed just fine after the incident.

Billabong sells off DaKline to pay debt

Struggling surfwear retailer Billabong has sold another of its brands and completed a $325 million bridge loan in order to pay off looming debts.

DaKine, a maker of backpacks, luggage and outerwear for snowboard, skiing, surfing and skating, was sold to US private equity firm Altamont Capital Partners for $70 million.

It is the second brand sold by Billabong in 15 months, after it offloaded a 48.5 per cent stake in Nixon accessories in April 2012.

The DaKine sale was part of a rescue deal made between Billabong and Altamont, which could result in Altamont holding a 40 per cent stake in the retailer.

Altamont's loan to Billabong, which attracts a 12 per cent annual interest rate, was drawn down on Friday, allowing Billabong to repay a $289 million debt.

Altamont has also nominated two new directors to the Billabong board, who will stand for election at the retailer's annual general meeting in October.

As a condition of the deal with Altamont, Billabong chief executive Launa Inman has stood down after just 14 months with the company, and has been replaced by Scott Olivet, the former boss of sunglasses brand Oakley.

Billabong has been hit by weak sales in recent years, especially in the US and Europe, and has found itself struggling with an oversized debt burden.

Billabong's shares were down one cent at 41 cents at 1315 AEST.

After mixup, fireworks erupt again in Whitey Bulger trial

Jane Collins / Reuters file

Admitted killer Stephen 'The Rifleman' Flemmi takes the witness stand in James 'Whitey' Bulger's murder and racketeering trial, as seen in this courtroom sketch in Boston on July 18.

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

The twisted life of a prosecution witness in the James ?Whitey? Bulger trial came under scrutiny Monday when he admitted he had sexual liaisons with a young woman who called him ?Daddy? growing up ? and that he stood by as she was strangled.

?It was a moment of weakness,? Stephen ?The Rifleman? Flemmi said of his two X-rated encounters with Deborah Hussey, according to the Boston Globe.

Flemmi, 79, has been on the stand in Boston Federal Court for three days, testifying about a string of gruesome murders that his ex-partner Bulger allegedly committed as head of the Winter Hill Gang.

When the defense finally got a crack at Flemmi, who is serving life for 10 murders, it zeroed in Hussey ? suggesting he took advantage of her and then killed her himself.

Hussey?s mother was Flemmi?s longtime mistress and bore him three children. Deborah was the woman?s daughter from an earlier relationship but knew Flemmi from the time she was small and treated him as a father figure.

By the 1980s, Hussey had become a problem for the Winter Hill Crew ? in and out of trouble with the law, using drugs, hanging out at the gang?s tavern headquarters, and dropping Flemmi?s and Bulger?s names, he testified.

Bulger wanted her gone and Flemmi agreed.

On a winter night in 1985, Hussey was brought to a house in South Boston where Bulger lay in wait, Flemmi said. He ?stepped out from behind the top of the basement stairs, grabbed her by the throat and started strangling her,? he told the court.

Bulger ?lost his balance and they both fell on the floor,? Flemmi said, according to the Globe. But Hussey was ?very fragile? and died quickly.

Flemmi and other gang members buried her in the basement while Bulger took a nap, he said. ?Under cross-examination, defense lawyer Henry Brennan suggested that Flemmi was the killer.

?Is it hard for you to accept the fact that you strangled a girl who sat on your lap as a little girl?? Brennan asked.

?I didn?t strangle her,? Flemmi insisted. ?He did acknowledge having sexual contact with her twice, but emphasized that it was not intercourse and was ?consensual.?

The account of Hussey?s death bore eerie similarities to the story of another 26-year-old, Flemmi?s longtime girlfriend, Debra Davis. Last week he testified that in 1981, he caved into pressure from Bulger and brought her to an empty house where she was strangled.

Although Bulger, 83, is charged with 19 slayings ? and has pleaded not guilty to all charges ? it?s thought that he is particularly anxious to distance himself from the deaths of Hussey and Davis because the killing of women went against his code.

Steven Senne / AP

Steve Davis speaks to reporters about his sister, alleged murder victim Debra Davis, outside U.S. District Court in Boston, on July 22. Davis exploded in anger in court after Bulger's former partner Stephen "The Rifleman" Flemmi identified him as a drug user and informant.

It was Flemmi, however, who came in for a tongue-lashing from Davis? brother in court on Monday. ?The aging gangster suggested that Steve Davis was an informant and a drug addict, prompting him to stand up and shout, ?You?re a [expletive] liar!?

Apparently shaken by the outburst, Flemmi backtracked, apologized and said he was actually talking about another brother, Mickey.

?I was enraged,? Steve Davis, 55, later told NBC News. ?If the railing hadn?t been higher, I might have jumped right over it.

?I?m nothing like those guys,? Davis said. ?I made my mistakes and I?ve paid for it, but I?m not out there ratting on people, incriminating people.?

Bulger ? who spent 16 years on the lam as one of America?s most wanted ? shares Davis' distaste for the label of informant.

Since the trial started in June, he has hurled a profanity at a former agent who testified that the FBI recruited and aimed some four-letter words at an ex-confederate who called him one of "the biggest rats."

Brazil buzzing with anticipation ahead of Pope Francis' return to Latin America as pontiff

RIO DE JANEIRO - Pope Francis lands Monday in a Brazil electric with anticipation for the pontiff's first international trip, heading into the open arms of his home continent where mammoth crowds are expected to celebrate Mass on Rio's Copacabana beach.

The pope is coming to meet with legions of young Roman Catholics converging on Rio for the church's World Youth Day festival, believers whose behaviour so far hasn't been typical of the normal tourists in this seaside Sin City known for hedonistic excess.

More than 1 million people are expected to pack the white sands of Copacabana to celebrate Mass with Francis. He also will visit a tiny chapel in a trash-strewn slum, and grassroots Catholics love that he plans a side trip to venerate Brazil's patron saint.

"I'm here for faith! I'm here for joy! And I'm here for the first Latino pope!" Ismael Diaz, a 27-year-old pilgrim wrapped in the flag of his native Paraguay, said as he bounded down the stone sidewalks of Copacabana hours ahead of Francis' arrival.

Diaz gave high fives to four fellow pilgrims, then turned toward local beachgoers who looked on while calmly sipping green coconut water and staring from behind dark sunglasses.

"I'm here because I have the force of God in me and want to make disciples of all. Arghhhhhhhhhh!" he yelled, lifting his head and howling into Rio's hot, humid air before flexing his arms and going into a bodybuilder's pose.

Francis would have an easy time of it if all Catholics shared Diaz's fervour. But Diaz and his fellow pilgrims are the exception to the rule in Brazil and much of Latin America, a region with more faithful than any other in the world but where millions have left the church for rival Pentecostal evangelical churches or secularism.

A poll from the respected Datafolha group published Sunday in the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo said 57 per cent of Brazilians age 16 and older call themselves Catholic, the lowest ever recorded. Just six years ago, when Pope Benedict XVI visited, a poll by the same firm found 64 per cent considered themselves among the faithful. In 1980, when Pope John Paul II became the first pontiff to visit Brazil, 89 per cent listed themselves as Catholics, according to that year's census.

Pentecostal evangelicals stood at 19 per cent of the population in the latest poll, rising from virtually nothing three decades ago by aggressively proselytizing in Brazil's impoverished slums.

Beyond the numbers who claim one faith or another is the huge gap in the level of participation in the different churches, a fervour factor that deeply troubles the Catholic Church. The Datafolha poll said 63 per cent of Pentecostal evangelicals report going to church at least once a week, while only 28 per cent of Catholics say they go to Mass weekly.

Datafolha interviewed 3,758 people across Brazil on June 6-7 and said the poll had a margin error of two percentage points.

In his few months as pontiff, the 76-year-old Francis has demonstrated an easy ability to connect with people, in particular with young Catholics, demonstrating humility and a warmth the faithful feel is genuine. Church leaders hope his Brazil trip will deepen that appeal.

Keeping to his example that the Catholic church must be humble, Francis carried his own black hand luggage as he boarded a special Alitalia flight from Rome's Leonardo da Vinci airport on Monday.

"Every pope is different, and Pope Francis is showing himself to be extremely charismatic, with a language that is simple and direct," Sao Paulo Cardinal Odilo Scherer said. "I absolutely think there is renewed happiness within the church that began with the election of Pope Francis."

Fernando Altemeyer, a theologian at the Catholic University of Sao Paulo, said that warmth and understanding is entirely related to Francis being the first pope from Latin America, where he's had more exposure to the harsh realities of life on the continent than European popes of the past.

"It allows him to understand and promote a Catholicism that's felt in the body, that's visceral," Altemeyer said. "That changes a Catholicism that for hundreds of years has been felt more in the mind, that's been a very European Christianity."

All of which gives even more force to a New Evangelization effort that was pushed by John Paul II and picked up steam under Benedict, with the World Youth Day and it's theme of "Go and make disciples of all nations" expressing the desire to more ardently spread the Gospel.

Playing out in parallel to the papal visit is political unrest in Brazil, where widespread anti-government protests that began last month have continued and are expected to take place right outside Rio's Guanabara Palace, the seat of state power where Francis is to meet with President Dilma Rousseff on Monday evening shortly after his arrival.

With the exception of gay rights groups and others angered by the church's doctrine against abortion and same-sex marriages, the target of most protesters won't be Francis but the government and political corruption. The pontiff is said to support Brazilians peacefully taking to the streets, and when he served as a cardinal in Buenos Aires he didn't shy from conflict with Argentina's leaders as he railed against corruption.

The pope will likely avoid hot-button issues like abortion and same-sex marriages while in Brazil, and focus on his message that the church should put its attention on the poor and that clergy must lead a humble life.

Brazil allows abortions only in cases of rape or risk to a mother's life or if a fetus is brainless, and the nation's supreme court in 2011 approved civil unions for same-sex couples. State courts have since allowed those unions to become full-fledged marriages.

The Catholic Church is not as active in politics in Brazil as it is in other Latin American nations, though it strongly opposes any efforts to loosen abortion laws and took part in the legal argument against civil unions when the matter was before the top court.

When Francis talks with Rousseff, they are likely to focus on the poor. Upon taking office, the Brazilian leader declared that eradicating extreme poverty was her top goal as president, and she has expanded a network of social welfare programs that have helped lift almost 30 million Brazilians out of poverty in the last decade.

"The good thing from a social perspective is that he understands the increasing stratification of wealth in Latin America," said Joseph Palacios, a sociologist at Georgetown University and former Catholic priest who has studied the church.

"Unlike his predecessors, who had a theoretical understanding, Francis has a pastoral understanding honed by living and working in working-class neighbourhoods of Buenos Aires. All of his understanding of poverty and other social issues appear to be based on his experiences, not theory or doctrine."

That's evident to Maria Nascimento, a 60-year-old Catholic living in the Varginha slum where Francis will pay a visit this week.

"God chose wisely when he decided to send this humble man to lead the church. He's loved in this community because he's talking about poor people," she said, standing in her kitchen where photos of grandchildren's baptisms were stuck to her refrigerator with magnets.

"There's going to be a huge impact on Brazil after he has come and left, after his feet have walked these streets in our slum. He's going to help the church in Brazil, the love here for him is growing so fast."
