Carey Baptist Church to remove pews in bid to draw in more people

A Preston Church has revealed ambitious plans to remove pews in a bid to make worshipping more flexible. Carey Baptist Church on Pole Street has submitted plans to take out pews seating 200 people and replace them with 60 wooden chairs. Bosses say the decision was taken after a gradual decline in numbers which meant they had to re-think the way they carried out services. If plans are approved it will also mean the main Church is more wheelchair friendly. The building was opened in 1826 before being bought by a group from Fishergate Baptist Church in 1854. It was one of the first churches in Britain to be used for meetings of the Temperance Movement. Rev James Watterson said: ?The plan is simply to make some changes to the interior, we are not altering the facade. ?The way the Church is now there are two raised areas. We are going to level the floor, remove the pews and put in good wooden Church chairs. ?We felt that having chairs would be more flexible, and more suitable to our Church work today. ?Preston?s conservation officer has seen it and is happy and because of the age of the building the Georgian and Victorian Society?s have also been consulted. They are both happy it?s been done in a sensitive way. It?s not very, very dramatic but it will improve access and make worship easier.?
